Self-Discipline Defined

  • It is not like the discipline that is punishment.  It is self-control.  Self-discipline can be not “losing it,” even when you are angry.  It can be forcing yourself to finish a job you begin.. It can be practicing your shot, or your music, or your dance steps, by yourself to get better on your own.  It can be resisting pressure to do things when “everyone is doing it.”  It can be walking away from trash talk or violence.  It can be getting to school or a job on time, even when you have been up late.  It can be keeping your mind focused when there are distractions.

  •

  • Everyone has the potential to show self-discipline.  But like any skill, it needs to be developed.  At first it may seem hard, but the more you use it, the more natural it becomes.  Self-discipline is power.  People who have it feel pride that they have the power.

  •

  • Most of the benefit goes to the person strong enough to have self-discipline.  But everyone around the person benefits as well.  When each person has self-discipline, there are fewer arguments, fewer fights, and fewer annoying interruptions.  There is more respect among people.  The world around you is a more pleasant place to be.
